Transtorno do Déficit de Atenção é um transtorno neuropsiquiátrico crônico, caracterizado por padrões persistentes de desatenção, hiper-atividade e impulsividade. É prevalente em até 10% da população escolar e frequentemente é identificado quando a criança cursa as duas primeiras séries do ensino fundamental. É comumente observado na infância e frequentemente persiste na vida adulta. Pode manifestar-se em concomitância com o Transtorno da Conduta, Transtorno Desafiador de Oposição, Transtornos da Aprendizagem, Ansiedade e Depressão. A etiologia do Transtorno do Déficit de Atenção é multifatorial e sabe-se que atinge mais meninos que meninas; o diagnóstico, que deve ser multidisciplinar, muitas vezes resulta impreciso, devido ao uso de metodologia inapropriada. O processo de intervenção compreende assistência psicoeducacional, medicação, orientação dos pais e terapia familiar, com o objetivo principal de promover a adaptação da criança, tanto ao ambiente familiar, quanto ao acadêmico e Social.
