ATITUDES EM RELAÇÃO A VELHICE: UMA REVISÃO DE LITERATURA * 1ª parte - Estudos Interculturais
Resumo
Tradicionalmente a Gerontologia e a Psicologia têm assumido que predominam atitudes negativas em relação ao velho e à velhice, nas sociedades e nos indivíduos. Entretanto, não há evidências de pesquisas suficientes, em apoio a essa noção. Este artigo é o primeiro de uma série de três, dedicados à análise de uma amostra de pesquisa realizada entre 1945 a 1987. Os estudos foram categorizados em duas rubricas: estudos interculturais (texto 1) e pesquisas focalizando variáveis individuais (psicológicas e sociológicas) (texto 2). O terceiro texto analisa as principais tendências da literatura na área. O texto que segue trata de pesquisas sobre a posição do velho nas sociedades "primitivas" e históricas, nas modernizadas e em vias de modernização e sobre a imagem do velho refletida pelos meios simbólicos como a TV, a literatura Infantil e para Adultos, a Poesia, os anúncios de propaganda e as tiras de humor. Conclui que é impossível estabelecer comparações consistentes entre culturas ou seus subgrupos e que os dados de pesquisa não confirmam a existência de um preconceito universal contra o idoso. Parece relevante que a Gero psicologia realize uma crítica interna de seus conceitos básicos, procedimentos de pesquisa e práticas profissionais.
