Abstract

Porphyromonas is an anaerobic, Gram-negative bacteria. The lypopolysaccharide in its membrane, expresses antigenic and toxic properties. lts virulence, as that of other microorganisms, is related to its adherence to the host tissues, its protection against the host's immune system, and its destruction of the host tissues. Such virulence determinants are induced by the bacteria's metabolic enzymes, liberated in the environment where they are settled. The virulence of these pathogenic bacteria is regulated by a variety of genes, which have been studied to elicit a better comprehension of their adaptations, and therefore, of their dissemination and the infections they cause in the host. Porphyromonas are part of the oral cavity's bacterial flora., and may participate in severa/ diseases as dental caries, gengival inflammation and periodontitis. The environment of porphyromonas gengiva/is, together with other species, is in the gengival rift, an area that presents temperature variatíons, pH, osmolaríty and nutrients dísponíbílíty To understand these traíts of such microorganism is essentíal, so that, wíth more research and the discovery of new methods of prevention and contrai of thís pathogen, its incidence may be reduced. The aím of thís work was to perform a bíblíographíc review on the porphyromonas gíngivalís' most important vírulence factors, and to organize, in a c/ear and concise form, the data of greater interest about that periodontal pathogen.
