Abstract

Objective

To prospectively analyze the weight-height and neuropsychomotor development of two groups of children born weighing less than 1,500g, the first with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and the second without BPD, called the control group.
Methodology
22 children born weighing less than 1,500g were included. We used Shennan's criteria to classify children into two distinct groups: BPD (n=7) and control group (n=15). In addition to gestational age, the main variables studied from birth to 6 months of corrected gestational age were: weight, length, head circumference and neuropsychomotor development, according to the Denver Test.

Results
Gestational age in weeks was similar in both groups: BPD 28.57 ± 1.62 and control group 29.75 ± 1.08. Weight in kg at birth and at the sixth month of corrected gestational age was significantly lower in the BPD group (respectively 0.92 ± O, 18 and 5.73 ± 1.55) compared to the control group (respectively 1.18 ± O , 17 and 7, 19 ± 1, 17, p<0.05). The length in cm at birth and at the sixth month of corrected gestational age was also significantly lower in the BPD group (respectively 33.7 ± 2 and 60 ± 3.8) in relation to the control group (respectively 37.23 ± 1. 78 and 64 ± 2.9, p<0.05). In the assessment of neuropsychomotor development, all children in the BPD group showed some type of change. In the control group, only one showed changes.
Conclusion
Children with BPD showed less weight and height gain and a greater frequency of changes in neuropsychomotor development.
