CHARACTERISTICS OF COUPLES WHO SEEK STERILIZATION REVERSAL AT A PUBLIC INFERTILITY CLINIC AND THEIR REGRETING
Keywords:

Objective
To determine the characteristics of couples who sought reversal of tubal ligation in public services and the reason for regret.
Method
The medical records of 150 women with tubal ligations seen at the Marital Sterility Outpatient Clinic between 1985 and 2000 were retrospectively studied. The variables studied were the age of the woman and man at the first consultation, the woman's age at the time of tubal ligation, time of sterility, number of living children of both and reason for seeking treatment for reversal. Data analysis was descriptive.
Results
150 women and their partners were included. The average age of women at the first consultation for sterility was 31.9 years and at the time of tubal ligation it was 24.1 years. The average time of sterility was 7.8 years (SD±3.9). The majority of women (82.7%) had a history of 1 to 4 living children. The decision to seek treatment for 92.7% of them was made after starting a new relationship. Among the 139 new partners, the average age was 31.4 years, 72.0% did not have any living children and 12.0% had an only child.
Conclusion
Most women with regretted tubal ligations who seek infertility treatment are in a new relationship and their current partner either does not have children or wants one to form a new family. Tubal ligation recommended for young women increases the chance of regret.
