The basic principle of the rooming-in care is to provide complete assistance care and guidance to mothers regarding their and their children 's health. The objective of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of two educational activities focusing on breast feeding and infant assistance at the rooming-in care of the Celso Pierro Hospital and Maternity— PUC-Campinas. The study consisted of the application of a questionnaire to the mothers with items about basic and practical aspects on breastfeeding infant development and notions of basic child care. The mothers were distributed in three groups. according to the education strategv: Group I — the mothers were interviewed three times and received individual guidance during their stay in the Service; Group 2 — the questionnaire was applied only once, after the discharge guidance session, which is performed in group; Group 3 — the questionnaire was applied only once, before the mothers received any specific guidance, besides that regarding the hospital routine (control group). The approach used for guidance on breastfeeding techniques was effective in both intervention groups, showing deficiencies in the rooming-in care system routine. Concerning activities such as changing diapers and infant bathing, the frequency of satisfactory answers only occurred in Group 1. which received more direct and specific follow-up. leading to the conclusion that the group guidance was not sufficient to offer the necessary self-assurance to the mother to perform adequately perform these tasks. The results of this study showed that the two educational intervention programs that were assessed generated a positive impact on the mothers' knowledge about breast feeding and infant care, when compared to the group that received only the assistance of hospital routine.
