In the period of January 1989 to December 1990 were born in the Hospital e Maternidade Celso Pierro, 4043 babies weighing 500 g or more . Eighty-two were stillborns and 3961 were born alive. Sixty-two newborris (Red. The neonatal mortality rate was 15, 14 per thousand and the early neonatal monality rate was 1338 per thousand. ExcLuded the newborns with letal matformation and the deaths of babies weighing
less than 1000 g, the mortality rate was 7 5 per thousand. The stiUbirth rate was 20 ,28 per thousand, the perinatat mortatity 33 39 per thousand. The incidence of low birth weight was 1332 per cent. The main cause of death in the newborns was Respiratory Distress Syndrome and in a Stillborns was unknon. All the results are compared with the results of Brazilian’ s hospitaIs and Canadiarfs hospital and region.
