Abstract

Toe objectives of this investigation were to find out object relations of women with breast cancer and think about the clinicai process oftheir psychological care and to make follow-up and statistical comparisons of the adaptive equilibrium between two different phases, pre and post surgically intervention. The Phillipson's Objcct Rclations Test was applicd in two groups, and after analyzcd: in Group B there were 16 women who had bccn alrcady mastcctomyzcd and the 1S womcn ofGroup A wcrc waiting forafinal physician's diagnosis about hcr mastcctomy, i.e. they were in a prc-surgical group. Toe women were ali older than 29 ycars. Aftcr the surgical intervention of mastectomy, the women of Group B were assigned for six months of group psychologica\ counselling. Toe statistical analysis ofthc Object Relations Dominant Scale ofUnconscious System (Rosa, 1988) showed no significant difference between the two groups (mean was 2,49 in Group B and 1,70 in Group A). Toe obscrvcd Twas 1,27, lcss than the critica!value of 1,699 ofthe Student's table, with 29 degrec of frccdom and significancc levei of 5%. However, in the B2 plate (9), Group B composed by paticnts who had bccn mastcctomyzcd and wcrc counselling groups had shown higher adaptive equili brium than the Group A, the prc-surgical onc (p<0,05). Among thc color platcs ofSerie C, there was a little progress in the positive object relations, resulting in a better adaptive equilibrium immediatcly after conclusion of group psychological counselling, resulting in a less distorted perception of reality.During the prc-opcration thc paticnts showcd a lcss intcgratcd sclf, and wcre using more intcnsivcly thc defense mcchanisms of negation of psychic reality, projective identification and the scotomization was used as a protection against the carly phantasies of idealized and persecutory object. Toward the psychological counselling process, the transference reactions showed that the dread and persecutory intensity of these phantasies were decreased, according to the conclusions ofthe analysis from stories told in plate B2 ofthe Phillipson's Object Relations Test.
