Characterization of students' and teachers' attitudes towards mental illness in a psychology course

The objective was to characterize and compare the pattern of students and teachers attitudes towards mental iIIness in a Psychology course. The sample consisted of 144 1st to 5th year psychology students and of 35 faculty members and psychologists involved in the professional trainingof these students. The Opinion about Mental Illnes Scale was used, with collective applications and self-applications. Both groups presented strong adhesion to the Benevolence and Mental Hygiene Ideology factors and strong rejection of Authoritarianism. Students differed significantly from teachers with respect to all factors, except Benevolence. Teachers who intended to develop attitudes towards mental iIIness on the part of their students presented significant differences from teachers who did not declare this intention in Authoritarianismand of Interpersonal Etiology.
