Abstract

This studywas carried out at the University Hospital of Federal University of Rio deJaneiro, in thenutrition outpatients department. lt analyses the records data from 96 patients, totalizing 14% of all obese patients treated in a one year period. The aim ofthe studywas to determine the relation between costs and treatment effectiveness. The average weight loss variation was 3.26 ± 5.3 kg, and the average hospital treatment period was 58 ± 40.4 months. The text x2 was used in order to establish a relatión between annual cost per patient and the following factors: age, sex, regularity in the treatment, work place, initial Body Mass lndex (BMI), and other pathologies. As far asthe cosi per patient and the factors above mentioned are concerned, no statistical relation was found. Eachkilogram lost cosi US$327.31, an extremely high figure which includes expenses with the hospital apparatus working even when not necessary. On one hand, the costis nota result ofthe dietitian's work, but ontheother hand the weight loss is less than that reported in most re searches. lt is necessary a deeper study of the reasons leading to such high cost, but most important of all is the need of continuous re-evaluation and more effective integration with the health primary system.
