However, cholesterol level in childhood is a predictive factor of cholesterol leveI in aduhhood and this knowledge can help in the development of preventive strategies. A cross sectional study with school chüdren was developed to determine the cholesterol, lipoprotein cholesterot and trigtyceride levets. Blood samples were conecte'd after overnight fast and were anatyzed according to international procedures. The data show that mean levels of cholesterol (143mg/dt) , HDL-cholesterol (35mg/dl) and triglycerides (61 mg/dt) are under the ones mentioned in the literature. The mean level of LDL-chotesterol was 96mg/dl and of VLDL-cholesterol was 12mg/dl. The girls presented higher chotesterol and LDL-chotesterol levels than the boys between 8 and 9 years old. The results suggested a prevatence of 13.5%, of hyperchotesterotemia among the school children examined. Father studies of Brazilian children are necessary.
