A STUDY IN SCHOOLCHILDREN OF BARUERI (SP)
HEIGHT, SCHOOL PERFORMANCE AND SUPPLEMENTARY FEEDING: PART II. GROWTH PROFILE OF CHILDREN
Keywords:
nutritional status, supplementary feeding, body height, student, achievementAbstract
The aim of the study is to describe the height of 570 schoolchildren aged seven (143 with feeding supplementation during infancy and 427 unsupplemented), originated from public schools in Barueri - São Paulo (Brazil). The study also aims to investigate the relation of growth profile and school performance with the period of supplementation in a nutritional intervention program. Height-for-ageindicator was used, expressedin deciles according to the standard population (NCHS). The height profile was outlined in 3 moments: at the program admission, at the discharge, and at school admission. The proportion of children in the first decile detected at the time of admission was considerably reduced by the time of discharge, primarily in that group which received the supplementation for longer periods (from 51,2% to 16,3%). At school admission, the height profile showed about 10% ofthem in the first decile, except for the group thatremained longer at the program (25,6%). The unsupplemented group had a higher percentage of children with “good school performance"”. It was shown that the poorest people, affected by hunger, are the ones who are looking for supplementary feeding programs, with a positive impact on their stature. However, the growth profile ofthese childrenis outlined by the poor environment and living conditions of the population.
