Inside Women’s Professional Schools

Abstract

This article aims to relate common elements found within the Women’s Professional Schools that existed in the early twentieth century based on an important example that was the Escola Profissional Feminina de São Paulo, current Escola Técnica Estadual Carlos de Campos. This school opened in 1911 in the Brás neighborhood in São Paulo and welcomed girls interested in becoming good housewives and mothers. During the development of the essay on the architecture of this school, it was possible to raise objects and constructive elements still existing inside the building that contributed and contribute to the pedagogical direction of so many professional courses offered. As a methodology, these elements were photographed, described and located in the plan of Escola Profissional Feminina de São Paulo and at that time they will be classified by function such as storing, exhibiting, communicating or honoring and identified in other female professional schools of the period from their photographs to that it is possible to establish a common relationship of use in this teaching model. The results found point to a similarity in the existence of some elements in congruent female professional schools in the way they are arranged so that it is possible to establish a dialogue between students and what was necessary to be taught.
