“Allah means God”
A proposal to deconstruct social and media stereotypes about Islam, the Quran and Muslims

This theoretical-reflective and autoethnographic study seeks to foreground elements that are often erased, aiming to deconstruct misinformation about Islam that, over time, has contributed to the crystallisation of stereotypes and derogatory judgements. This study aims to list and critically examine the main distortions produced about Islam and Muslims, contrasting them with the original doctrinal teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah, while also highlighting how these precepts differ from the behaviors practiced by some followers. Throughout the study, we pointed out various distortions that are repeatedly reproduced, including distinctions between religion and culture, showing a huge discrepancy between the stereotypes built about Islam and its doctrinal foundations. We conclude that the stereotyping of Islamic doctrine and Muslims is the result of a historical process of epistemicide, linked to a legacy of antagonism and hostility that has grown over the centuries.
