Gianni Vattimo and the Weak Pauline Apocalyptic

A Dialogue Around the Letter to the Galatians

Abstract

This article proposes a dialogue between the philosophical thought of Gianni Vattimo and the apocalyptic view of the apostle Paul in Galatians 1,1–5. Drawing on the category of “weak apocalyptic,” rooted in Vattimo’s pensiero debole (weak thought), the article argues that both Paul and Vattimo offer an alternative to the strong, triumphalist apocalyptic tradition of Western Christianity. The kenosis of Christ, central to Pauline theology, is reinterpreted here as an act of secularization and renunciation of power, contrasting with metaphysical and imperial forms of religious domination. Vattimo’s critique of metaphysics – developed through Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Girard – finds resonance in Paul’s vision of the cross not as a tool of conquest but as a symbol of liberation and solidarity. Paul’s hybrid language – neither fully Greek nor entirely Semitic – reveals a political, cultural, and theological tension that resists dominant categories of his time. Paul’s proposal is the formation of a new people, defined not by ethnicity, law, or religion, but by faithfulness to the crucified Messiah.
