Characterization of Brazilian scientific production in the health sciences regarding the transgender population – an exploratory scientometric study

Characterizing the scientific production in the health sciences allows for estimating their potential implications in clinical practice. However, there is a gap in metascientific and scientometric studies regarding the national production related to the transgender population. This study intended to characterize the Brazilian scientific production in the health sciences regarding the transgender population between 2000 and 2022. It is a scientometric, documentary, cross-sectional, descriptive study, with articles extracted from the Literatura LatinoAmericana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde and Scientific Electronic Library Online databases that had transgender individuals as the population of interest and the first author affiliated with a national institution, regardless of their methodological design or the use of primary or secondary data. Among 196 selected articles, an increasing trend in the number of publications has been found, with a predominance of qualitative studies (37.8%), and reviews (35.2%), especially narrative and integrative ones. Publications in journals stratified as A3 (19.4%) in the QUALIS/CAPES 2017-2020 were prevalent. The most prevalent areas of the last author’s latest degree were Psychology (33.2%), Collective Health (15.3%), and Medicine (12.2%). It has been concluded therefore that there is a trend of growth in the national scientific output on the subject with a predominance of qualitative methods, designs often focused in understanding sociocultural, identity-related, and subjectivity aspects of individuals. Quantitative empirical studies, which guide clinical practice in the health sciences, were rare. Future studies should clarify if there is empirical production with quantitative designs on the subject by national authors in foreign journals.
