Understood as a place of safekeeping, the Archive has its essential role in custody, especially with regard to the protection of permanent records. Brazilian laws and standards establish guidelines for the custody, treatment and preservation of these documents, but they run into difficulties caused by the lack of consolidated archival policies and the low supervisory competence of the responsible authorities. In this context, the discussion about shared custody gains relevance, especially because of the adoption of cloud computing services. Through a literature review that addresses the trajectory of the concept of custody in Archival Science — from the custodial and post-custodial currents to current digital preservation models — we analyze how custody remains central to the guarantee of authenticity, while at the same time it needs to be reinforced by the contracts that regulate the relationship between producers, preservers and service providers. We conclude that, despite the transformations in the supports and preservation environments, custody maintains a preponderant role in the archives, making it necessary to have a clear definition of responsibilities to ensure the protection and authenticity of digital records.
